Welcome to spirit-rockmusic.eu!

Here we look at rock and pop music from a spiritual perspective.

Two of our favourite song writers are Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, though we believe that truckloads of songs of other artists deserve attention.

Our interpretations are certainly subjective. We don’t claim to be “right” in any way. Nor do we claim that the song writers “meant” anything the way we see it.

While we are sure not every reader will agree with our views, we hope to inspire some, and are looking forward to being connected with new ideas.

Added interpretation of Leonard Cohen’s Avalanche. It was only this year that I started seeing a spiritual context in the song. Had known it for many years. Had always been fascinated, but in a somewhat morbid way. 14 videos now.

We feel that the spoken word, combined with showing one’s face, is more contemporary than blog posts. So we started the spirit-rockmusic Youtube channel! Like with the website, it will take time to add new videos … Check out our progress!

About

We strongly believe that spiritual impulses reach out for humanity in many ways. Our mission is to dig in lyrics of rock and pop music songs (and sometimes movies) and look out for spiritual levels of understanding.

Of course, there is no right and wrong in this context. How music is perceived is very individual, and what resonates in one person in one way may resonate in another person in a much different way.

If we manage to raise interest in one or the other song, or if we manage to inspire looking at songs from a different angle, we will be more than happy.

We startet out with a German language blog (that features a Google translate option at least) that covers more topics (e. g. many posts about spiritual books). Seeing vivid discussions about Bob Dylan lyrics in English language forums motivated us to start this website.

Although confident about writing in English, we realized that not being native speakers, we sometimes struggle for words on subtle topics like here. Feedback and suggestions for better wording are welcome.

Bob Dylan: Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts – A Spiritual Transformation

Blood on the Tracks album cover

Dylan’s intriguing Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts lured in the background of my consciousness for a long time – now I feel it has matured enough to share my, certainly subjective, perspective of the song as a spiritual transformation. It is the second song of Dylan’s highly acclaimed 1975 album Blood on the Tracks, voted No. 9 in the Rolling Stone Magazine’s 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of all time (and confirmed at that position in the 2023 update) covered here. The first song from this album on this blog was Shelter from the Storm (for a video see here). read more
